Shank Racing Leads Ford Sweep At Daytona

After years of close calls, Michael Shank Racing climbed to the top of the mountain Sunday afternoon at Daytona Int’l Speedway.
With NASCAR Sprint Cup Series regular A.J. Allmendinger driving the final three hours behind the wheel the Shank Ford-Riley held off polesitter Ryan Dalziel and the Starworks Motorsports operation by xxxx seconds to win the 50th anniversary Rolex 24 At Daytona.
The winning car completed xxxx laps of the 3.56-mile road course before what most observers believe was the largest crowd in the history of the twice-around-the-clock sports car classic.
Sharing the Shank entry with Ozz Negri, John Pew and IndyCar Series driver Justin Wilson, who made his return to competition from a broken back suffered last summer, Allmendinger led a Ford sweep of the top three finishers, which included the second Michael Shank Racing machine finishing third.
While the Starworks entry with Dalziel, Lucas Luhr, Allan McNish, Alex Popow and Enzo Potalcchio dominated the first half of the race, Luhr got off course during the early morning hours damaging the rear of the car. It didn’t have the speed after that and the Shank No. 60 controlled the remainder of the race.
The second Shank Ford-Riley came home third with Jorge Goncalvez, Michael McDowell, Felipe Nasr and Gustavo Yacaman sharing the controls.
Fourth went to the Chip Ganassi Racing BMW-Riley of Juan Pablo Montoya, Jamie McMurray, Dario Franchitti and Scott Dixon.
Action Express Racing, which took its Corvette Daytona Prototype behind the wall on the first lap, battled back to finish fifth, three laps off the pace with David Donohue, Darren Law and Christian Fittipaldi driving.
Meanwhile in the GT category, Richard Lietz brought the Magnus Racing Porsche 911 GT3 to the checkered flag first (11th overall). Lietz shared the No. 44 with Andy Lally, John Potter and Rene Rast.
The Magnus entry finished a mere xxx ahead of the The Racers Group Porsche handled by Holf Henzler, Marc Goosens, Spencer Pumpelly, Jeroen Bleekemolen and Steven Berthau.
Class polesitters Brumos Porsche with Andrew Davis, Marc Lieb, Hurley Haywood and Leh Keen rounded out the GT podium.
