As promised, we’re back with part two of SuperFans 2015, a rundown of the top-five standings in the Amateur, or ticket buying, segment of our yearly look at who goes to the most races across America each season.

After struggling to catch up with botched mail forwarding precipitated by health issues that kept us in New York when we had expected to be in Florida for Speedweeks, we think we’ve finally collected all the errant SuperFans entries.

Entries for our annual SuperFans contest are rolling in even without our traditional late-season call for race totals and comments, another indication of just how dedicated America’s hard-core race fans really are.

Charland Coupe Comes To Saratoga Museum

Vintage race car collector Phil Elliston of Southhampton, N.Y., recently made the trek from his Long Island home to the Saratoga Automobile Museum with a fascinating piece of area stock car racing history, the No. 888 three-window coupe once wheeled at the nearby Albany-Saratoga and Fonda Speedways by the legendary Rene Charland.

Saratoga Museum Adds Petty Pontiac


Thanks to longtime NASCAR modified racer Roger Griffith of New Hartford, N.Y., a 1985 Curb Racing/STP Pontiac wheeled by NASCAR superstar Richard Petty is now on display in the Saratoga Automobile Museum’s “Racing in New York” gallery.

It was a long, cold day at Super DIRT Week Saturday at the New York State Fairgrounds, but Jimmy Phelps, at least, was smiling at the “after dark” conclusion of the Salute to the Troops 150 for 358 DIRTcar modifieds.

The DIRT troops went to work early Saturday morning, but the 9:15 a.m. start for Friday’s rain delayed Super DIRT Week qualifying events saw business as usual at the Syracuse Mile at the New York State Fairgrounds.

Insiders were shocked Wednesday when multiple-time Syracuse 200 winner Alan Johnson vacated his high profile ride in the Halmar International No. 14J. But another former winner, Jimmy Horton, was on hand and jumped into the car, supervised by three-time winner Gary Balough.
