Chili Bowl 1997: Snakebitten Boat Finally Wins

Snakebitten several years at the Chili Bowl Nationals, Billy Boat was not to be denied in 1997 as he blasted by Danny Lasoski on lap 44 to take the $6,000 triumph.

Tim McCreadie used the low groove around the Tulsa Expo Raceway to shock a sold-out crowd and more than 270 other competitors in Saturday night’s 20th annual Chili Bowl Nationals.

A crowd of more than 3,000 was on hand to see sprint-car star Sammy Swindell dominate the third annual Original Chili Bowl Midget Nationals on Expo Square’s indoor quarter-mile dirt track Saturday night.

Kevin Swindell held off a late-race charge from his father and five-time event winner Sammy and six cautions in the final 15 laps to snag a Silver Driller in the 25th anniversary of the Lucas Oil Chili Bowl Nationals Saturday night at the QuikTrip Center’s Tulsa Expo Raceway, becoming the first back-to-back winner.
