Donny Schatz: Consistency Can Help Everyone To Shine
Being consistent in everything you do seems to benefit everyone and everything around you.
Consistency is all any racer asks for. Whether it's how your seat fits in the race car to how the race program runs to how you communicate with your crew. Racing for more than half of my life has taught me many lessons in how to do and not to do certain things. Being consistent in everything you do seems to benefit everyone and everything around you.
It's an exciting time in the world of sprint-car racing as we’ve reached the dog days of summer, and we're racing at least three times a week. We've got a lot of momentum going with the current television deal on ESPN2. The big-money races are coming up too, so the sport has to capitalize on it.
I understand the last couple of years have been a transition period, but now it's on everyone involved with the World of Outlaws to shine. We have to make sure that every single night we go out we put on the best show we can no matter if it's in Rapid City, S.D., Pevely, Mo., or Rossburg, Ohio. Everything we do is critical. Once we get the sport to where it's growing so fast that we've got overflowing crowds and every track in the country wanting to book our shows, then we can start looking at some of the other things.
I've tried to be consistent in the things I say and do. When I talk everything might not come out right. I'm not trying to bash people or cause problems. I'm just looking at the long run. I'm not looking for changes to be made that are only going to benefit me or my team. We have to consider what's best for the other 25 teams that are out here racing and the 50 teams across the country that are capable of racing with the Outlaws.
Being around a while you see things, and all you have to do is pay attention and you'll learn some things. There are times when you have to speak your mind a little bit, because this is your future and you want to see it go the right direction. I'm not trying to protect myself. I'm trying to protect this sport and make sure we have a place to race for a long time to come.
No matter if it's a TV race, one of the big-money races or a Sunday night race in upstate New York, we have to put a consistent product out there for the fans. Ted Johnson was a fan first and foremost. When he had a race, he did what was best for the fans. Even with everything else he was doing to make the show work, he still got chills down his spine watching the races.
We've got to make it a win/win situation where there is great racing on the track for both the drivers and fans. Regardless of who wins or loses, we have to be at tracks where we can put on a good show with lots of passing, where every team is capable of being at their best on the track. That's what all of the teams out here are striving to do and pushing hard every day to accomplish.
Like I said, it’s all about consistency. The next four weeks are going to be filled with excitement for everyone in sprint-car racing. I have to thank all the fans that come out and see us and those that tune into ESPN2 and Speed as well.
Over the years we’ve been very consistent during this stretch of the season, and I sure hope that continues.
