Enthusiasts, Old Friends Unite

VALLEY STREAM, N.Y.

Vintage racing and the interest in it, I’m happy to say, is continuing to grow. I speak for many of us who are grateful for all the hard work by the dedicated preserving our sport’s legacy. This week, there’s a big event. The Williams Grove Old Timers will have its 33rd annual reunion in conjunction with the Eastern Museum of Motor Racing. Activities start Thursday. This year, they are saluting Lloyd racing and the late Vic Yerardi. The reunion will run through Sunday.
The museum and the adjoining Latimore Valley Fairgrounds are sights to see. The museum will be expanding, as NSSN’s Chris Economaki has donated his library of racing books. I will someday give them my huge collection of VHS racing tapes.
On Friday, after the Lloyd display and roundtable talks, it will move to Williams Grove Speedway. There will be track time for antique cars, and the Grove will stage its Jack Gunn Memorial with triple 20s for sprints. This is the kind of racing us old-timers will enjoy.
• On Sunday, Aug. 26, comes an event very close to my heart. Marty Himes will stage the eighth annual Long Island reunion at Riverhead Raceway. There will be track time, and you don’t have to be from L.I. to participate. The track is a third-mile off the last exit of the L.I. Expressway. Marty’s phone number is (631) 666-4912. Many of us who were part of Freeport, Islip and Riverhead will be on hand. They’ll be plenty of sputtering, coughing and backfiring, and the cars will make noises, too! Marty is bringing his Frankie Cal sprint car. It’s always great to hear the roar of an Offy. The meet starts in the morning and ends at sunset.
• Last year, car owner Ken Brenn staged a huge event in Warren, N.J. The second one is slated for Sunday, Sept. 9. Antique cars can be registered at the Warren, N.J.com Web site. Brenn can be reached at (908) 647-1609.
• The Saratoga Springs museum near Albany, N.Y, is active and will have its Lost Racetrack 2 discussion the Saturday after Thanksgiving. Thompson, Conn., has its big antique show on Saturday, Aug. 25.
Older and somewhat proud of it at 25 Emerson Place, Valley Stream, NY 11580. E-mail at racewri 771@aol.com.
