Brett Hearn Wins His Own Race

One thing Hearn didn’t want to see was the No. 49 of Dunn, who sat fifth at halfway, then sneaked into third nearly unnoticed as Hearn and Tomkins dueled. Once by Tomkins, he closed rapidly on Hearn running right around the bottom and was even with Hearn when the lap-86 yellow flag waved.

“I saw Billy and said to myself, ‘Where’d he come from?’ offered the elated Hearn. “I knew he didn’t start in the top 12, so I decided he must be really good and I’d better get going.”

Get going he did, immediately pulling out to a full turn lead when the green reappeared to easily lead Dunn and Tomkins to the $9,711 checkered flag. Fast-timer Decker was fourth ahead of Planck, Marc Johnson, Varin, Justin Haers, Matt Sheppard and Jimmy Phelps.

“I’m happy with third,” tipped Tomkins. “We had a third-place car, I haven’t been here since 2008 and we just threw a setup at the car to see what would happen. We were lucky enough to get in the redraw and start up front but towards the end, I didn’t have any drive when I got off a straight line.”

Series point leader Sheppard took the $500 winner’s prize in the 12-lap Cash Dash, which pitted the top five local drivers against five DIRTcar stars.

In the companion pro stock event, Byron Wescott led flag to flag, fighting off Dan Older and Chuck Towslee.
