PENTON, Ala. – Ronnie Johnson captured his first career Chevrolet Performance Super Late Model Series win on Saturday night at Penton Raceway driving the NeSmith Chevrolet Special.

The National Dirt Late Model Hall of Fame Inductee passed Brian Ligon with four laps to go to take not only the victory, but also the point lead.

“He (Ligon) was running a higher groove than me, but I just couldn’t quite get under him coming off the corners,” Johnson said. “We were approaching some lapped cars that threw some loose dirt on the track, and he slipped the nose of his car up the track which gave just enough to get under him to take the lead.”

Johnson also said the win was special because he could add another track to his impressive win list of different race track across the country.

“I have started a list of tracks where I have won feature events at through my career, and now I can add Penton Raceway to that list,” Johnson said. “I’ve run a few races here over the years, but tonight was my first win here.”

Ligon would take the checkered flag in the second spot driving the Big Dog Disposal Special, but he was disqualified during the post-race technical inspection with a chemically altered tire. That moved J.R. Moseley up to the second spot in the ASA Performance Special in his first-ever Chevy Super Series start.

Tyler Crowder took the third spot in the Crowder Trucking Rocket and Jacob Grizzle finished fourth in the Carolina Performance Special. Dingus Griffin was fifth in the Tommy Pope Construction Special.

The finish:

Ronnie Johnson, J.R. Moseley, Tyler Crowder, Jacob Grizzle, Dingus Griffin, Josh Adkins, Chase Edge, Matthew Turner, Tim Roszell, David Brannon, Brent Barrett, Ronald Dunn, Carlton Freeman, Mark Dowdy, Dana Eiland, Jake Knowles, Ted Lackey, Chris Noah, Cord Dodgen, Jaden Frame, Tim Busha, Lavon Sparks, Frank Wilson, Ross Martin, Brian Ligon.
