McCreadie Fights Off Lanigan At Volusia

BARBERVILLE, Fla. — Most drivers on the WoO LM tour have a hard time passing defending champion Darrell Lanigan once.

Tim McCreadie did it twice in Wednesday night’s 40-lap UMP Late Model feature at Volusia Speedway Park’s DIRTcar Nationals and still only won by inches.

McCreadie, Lanigan and Billy Moyer finished under the proverbial blanket and another lap might have yielded an entirely different finish as both Lanigan and Moyer seemed to be getting faster as the laps wound down.

Lanigan, who started outside of McCreadie’s teammate Vic Coffey on the front row, took the lead only to have a seven-car crash call off the start.

Lanigan got another great start on the second try with McCreadie disposing of Coffey on lap three to set up their racelong battle.

The rim-riding New Yorker kept trying Lanigan through lap 12 when he finally got by as they drove off turn four. But by lap 20, Lanigan was back inside McCreadie and three laps later he retook the lead as Moyer, up from row four, drew in on the lead duo.

A yellow on lap 29 gave McCreadie another shot at Lanigan and when the green flag waved he sailed his Sweeteners No. 39 into turn one outside the Kentuckian, stayed even down the backstretch and took the lead off turn four again.

“The outside was really good for four or five laps before it crumbled up again,” said the winner. “I think Darrell had the better car but we made it work. It feels good to beat anybody at this level, but it’s especially great to beat him and Moyer, as they’re two of the best in the sport.”

By lap 32, Moyer had passed Lanigan and was alongside McCreadie, but T-Mac got away again, then took the bottom away from his challengers for the remaining laps. But this move almost did him in, as Lanigan got a last-lap run on him off turn four on the high side but came up short by inches.

“I thought I had it,” declared Lanigan. “I had another shot there at the end and I thought it worked, but Timmy is back on his game and he’s tough again.”

“I thought I might get both of them,” added Moyer. “It got pretty tight there on that last lap.”

Don O’Neil was fourth ahead of Earl Pearson Jr.

The finish:
