Phillips Outruns Anderson At I-80
GREENWOOD, Neb. – Terry Phillips outraced John Anderson to win Friday’s Lucas Oil Midwest Latemodel Racing Ass’n feature at I-80 Speedway.
Phillips used the top side of the I-80 Speedway in turns one and two and pinned Anderson to the bottom of turns three and four to secure the lead. He pulled away to his tihrd Lucas Oil MLRA victory in as many events.
“A big race track is a little harder on tires,” said Phillips. “(I) kind of saved my stuff to the end. Not that I was saving it a lot. I was having to hustle the car pretty good. When you’re leading you don’t know where to go for sure, and I took advantage of that.”
Phillips narrowly escaped a multi-car pile up, with 14 laps to go, as Denny Eckrich was sideways in the middle of one and two. Bill Koons and Mark Dotson were also involved. Phillips made contact with Dotson on the right side of his car, but the damage didn’t hinder him.
Anderson and Chad Simpson started on the front row of the 35-lap feature. The two veterans worked side by side for the first several laps.
Anderson was able to overtake Simpson on lap eight and finish second. Simpson settled into third, but charged late to make it interesting.
