VERNON, N.Y. – Matt Sheppard drove to victory in the Race of Champions Dirt Modified Series main event at Utica-Rome Speedway Wednesday evening.

Jimmy Phelps jumped into the lead at the start of the 100-lap feature, but he didn’t stay there very long.

On lap 18 Sheppard, the defending Super DIRTcar Series big-block modified champion, overtook Phelps for the top spot.

That was all she wrote for the rest of the field as Sheppard led the rest of the way to pick up the victory at the half-mile clay oval.

Phelps settled for second, followed by Pat Ward, Billy Decker and Ronnie Johnson.

Matt Janczuk won the companion Race of Champions Dirt Sportsman Series feature.
