Editor’s Note: This is the 16th installment in National Speed Sport News’ 30 Days of Knoxville countdown to the 52nd annual Goodyear Knoxville Nationals. During the coming days we will revisit past races, drivers and statistics, while previewing this year’s event.

Mark Dobmeier is among the winningest racing drivers in the country and he makes an extraordinary journey to compete at Knoxville Raceway each weekend. Here’s an excerpt from the story that will appear in the August issue of SPEED SPORT Magazine:

For the local fans at Knoxville Raceway, a group of young drivers has brought new hope of dethroning the visiting Outlaws in recent few years.

Young guns like Davey Heskin, Dusty Zomer, Bronson Maeschen, Josh Schneiderman and Austin McCarl had served notice with strong Nationals runs in recent past. Heading into the 52nd edition, keep your eyes on Mark Dobmeier. The Grand Forks, N.D., native won a preliminary feature during the 2011 Nationals and is the winningest 410 driver in the country — that’s right, the country — since 2003.

Dobmeier and his co-owner, Dave Lunstra, have a different weekend than the res of the world. After competing at his hometown River Cities Speedway (where he has more than quadrupled his career victory total on the next driver in the track history there) on Friday night, he heads south. He’ll pick up Lunstra and the crew in Sioux Falls after a five-hour drive. That is half the trip. Next is another five hours to Knoxville to race on Saturday night.

Another overnight five-hour drive is next and on Sunday night they compete at Huset’s Speedway, where Dobmeier has won a championship. There’s no rest for the weary because Dobmeier has to be at work at his radiator shop on Monday morning after another five-hour drive. To put it in perspective, imagine driving from Knoxville to Eldora Speedway and back every single weekend.
