Swindell Chases The TItle
Editor’s Note: This is the 10th installment in National Speed Sport News’ 30 Days of Knoxville countdown to the 52nd annual Goodyear Knoxville Nationals. During the coming days we will revisit past races, drivers and statistics, while previewing this year’s event.
Sammy Swindell didn’t plan to challenge for the World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series championship, but leads the series in victories and is in the championship. Swindell chatted with SPEED SPORT Magazine’s Keith Waltz, covering many aspects of the 56-year-old drivers glorious career. Here’s an excerpt from the story that will appear in the August issue of SPEED SPORT Magazine:
Interestingly, even though Swindell was leading the standings as of July 1, the driver of the No. 1 Big Game Treestands entry has not committed to running the full World of Outlaws schedule.
“We kind of a made a commitment to run through May, which there wasn’t really much else going on anyway. Now we’ve run through June, so we are just kind of taking it a step at a time,” said Swindell, who was the series’ leading feature winner with six at that point. “We still don’t have to run the whole year. My car owner, Tod Quiring, I think he would like to win one. But you can see where maybe it’s not worth it sometimes. It’s a lot of expense, a lot of hard work and you’re gone from home a lot.
“That’s one of the reasons it’s been several years since I’ve done the whole series. But things change during your life,” Swindell continued. “Kevin (his son) is now kind of doing his own stuff, so we don’t have to worry about him. There was an opportunity for us to go back and do what I was doing before. So that’s probably the biggest thing. We don’t have to worry about his car, or his career or whatever. It’s just back to where I’m doing my racing and that’s it.”
