FAST FACTS
• Sebring Int’l Raceway was originally a World War II B-17 training base known as Hendricks Field. During its five years of activity, the base originated 488,936 hours of flying time.
• 3,360 cars have started the 12 Hours of Sebring in its first 55 years. More than 3,000 drivers representing 42 countries have participated.
• No car qualifying outside the top four has won Sebring in the past 21 years. The pole winner has won 10 times in that period.
• The GT2 class finish in 2007 was the closest in the 55-year history of the race. Ferrari won by just 0.202 second.
• John Paul, Jr. (22 years, 1 month) was the youngest Sebring winner in 1982, while Gianpiero Moretti (58 years, 4 months) was the oldest in 1998.
FAST FACTS II
• Tom Kristensen is the only four-time overall winner of the 12 Hours of Sebring. He has 11 combined wins at Sebring and Le Mans. However, with class wins included Phil Hill and Johnny O’Connell, with six victories each, are the winningest drivers at Sebring.
• Andy Wallace has finished on the podium a record 10 times at Sebring, more than any other driver.
• Sebring is famous not only for hosting the 12 Hours of Sebring, but it was also the site of the first United States Grand Prix in 1959, the first SCCA Trans-Am race in 1966 and the first FIA GT race in America in 1997.
• Four Indianapolis 500 winners have also won the 12 Hours of Sebring — Bobby Rahal, A.J. Foyt, Arie Luyendyk and Mario Andretti.
• The largest starting field at Sebring was 84 cars in 1983.
• Hurley Haywood holds the all-time record with 28 Sebring starts, but Johnny O’Connell has the longest current streak, having competed in 17-consecutive 12 Hours of Sebring, dating back to 1991.
• Ray Crawford is the only person to complete the entire 12 Hours of Sebring without a co-driver. The American Automobile Ass’n gave him special permission in 1955.
