SILVERSTONE, Great Britain — Sunday Nico Rosberg accomplished something his legendary father, Keke, never did.

Rosberg won the British Grand Prix Formula One race at the famed Silverstone circuit, holding off a furious charge from Red Bull driver Mark Webber to win by seven-tenths of a second.

It was the second victory of the season for the Mercedes driver and the third of his career. Rosberg won the Monaco Grand Prix earlier this year.

“It is a very special day and what makes it more special is that our factory is so close,” Rosberg said. “Our team has done such a great job and we’ve just gotten faster and faster as the season has gone on.”

Ferrari driver Fernando Alonso rounded out the podium, but may have been the biggest winner on the day. With point leader Sebastian Vettel dropping out with a transmission failure in his Red Bull, Alonso closed the gap in the standings from 36 points to 21.

Polesitter Lewis Hamilton, Rosberg’s Mercedes teammate, suffered a tire failure on lap seven, but fought back all day long to finish fourth.

It was one of many tire failures during the event.

Kimi Raikkonen rounded out the top five for Lotus.
