HOCKENHEIM, Germany – Mercedes’ chances of a win in their home Grand Prix are off to a strong start.

Lewis Hamilton narrowly edged Silver Arrows teammate Nico Rosberg for the fastest time in second practice on Friday, taking the top spot on the board by .024 seconds in the penultimate session before Sunday’s German Grand Prix in Hockenheim.

Daniel Ricciardo’s Red Bull was third, .102 seconds behind Hamilton’s one minute, 18.341-second fastest lap.

Kimi Raikkonen’s Ferrari and Kevin Magnussen’s McLaren rounded out the top five.

Felipe Massa (Williams), Jenson Button (McLaren), Sebastian Vettel (Red Bull), Fernando Alonso (Ferrari) and Valtteri Bottas (Williams) completed the top 10. Eight drivers were within a second of Hamilton’s top time.

The Briton is seeking his series-high sixth win of the season on Sunday.

Bottas returned to his Williams after surrendering the seat in first practice to reserve driver Susie Wolff, the first female to participate in an F-1 practice this season. Wolff was 15th in FP1.
