Mercedes’ Rosberg Scores Pole No. 6
MOGYOROD, Hungary – Nico Rosberg claimed his sixth pole position of the season in a dramatic, rain-filled qualifying session in Hungary on Saturday, which saw his teammate Lewis Hamilton exit early on after his Mercedes was engulfed in flames.
Red Bull’s Sebastian Vettel was second-quickest, 0.486 seconds behind Rosberg, with Williams’ Valtteri Bottas out-pacing the second Red Bull of Daniel Ricciardo for third.
Hamilton, Rosberg’s closest rival for the championship, starts 21st on Sunday, following the fire in Q1 that prevented him from posting a lap time.
Fernando Alonso’s Ferrari qualified fifth, with Felipe Massa’s Williams in sixth.
Jenson Button (McLaren), Jean-Eric Vergne (Scuderia Toro Rosso), Nico Hulkenberg (Force India) and Kevin Magnussen rounded out the top 10.
Like Hamilton, Ferrari driver Kimi Raikkonen had a Saturday he’d rather forget. The 2007 World Champion failed to advance from Q1, missing the 16th spot by .064 seconds to Jules Bianchi’s Marussia. Raikkonen starts 17th on Sunday.
