SPA FRANCORCHAMPS, Belgium – Kamui Kobayashi set the fastest time in a pair of soaked Formula One World Championship practices Friday at Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps.
Kobayashi’s fast lap of 2:11.389 came in the first of two wet practice sessions in his Sauber-Ferrari, which kept teams on their toes throughout the day.
The wet conditions kept most teams in the garage until late in the first practice session, when conditions began to improve slightly.
Kobayashi ran the most laps in the first practice session and was more than half a second faster than his closest competitor, Pastor Maldonado in the Williams-Renault.
Daniel Ricciardo and Jean-Eric Vergne impressed by placing their STR-Ferrari entries third and fourth on the speed charts in the first session. Mark Webber’s Red Bull Racing-Renault was fifth fast in the first session.
The rain got even worse during the second session, meaning only 18 of the 24 teams made it on track, with Marussia-Cosworth of Charles Pic setting fast time at 2:49.354.
While 18 teams made it on track during the session, only 10 of them actually set a lap time.
