BUDAPEST, Hungary — Daniel Ricciardo hunted down a pair of world champions and won Sunday’s Hungarian Grand Prix at the Hungaroring.

Ricciardo, whose Red Bull team was among the first to go to slick tires after a rainy start to the race, chipped away at the leaders all race long and passed Mercedes racer Lewis Hamilton for second with three laps remaining and one lap later blasted around Fernando Alonso to take the lead. The 25-year-old Australian romped away from his chasers during the final two circuits to collect his second victory of the season.

“It feels as good as the first,” Ricciardo said. “The safety car at the beginning played to our advantage and the second one didn’t play to our advantage, but we had to pick our way through and that was a lot of fun there the last few laps.”

Alonso brought his Ferrari home in second for his best finish of the season, while Hamilton edged his Mercedes teammate Nico Rosberg, who had the fastest car on the track during the closing laps, for the final podium position.

“I am extremely satisfied. It has been a tough weekend and a tough season and to get on the podium is a bit of a surprise,” Alonso said. “We risked it and we got on the podium. It was a heck of the job by the team.”

Felipe Massa finished fifth for Williams, while Hamilton cut Rosberg’s point lead to 11 points heading into the four-week break before resuming the season at Spa.

“We are going to celebrate tonight and party for a few days and then look forward to Spa,” Ricciardo said. “We want to keep building on what we did the six months of the year. It’s really been phenomenal.”
