MONTREAL – Nico Rosberg edged Mercedes teammate Lewis Hamilton to clinch pole position for Sunday’s Canadian Grand Pix at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve by just .079 of a seconds Saturday afternoon.

Sebastian Vettel claimed third for Red Bull, but less than four hundredths of a second covered the German, the two Williams of Valtteri Bottas and Felipe Massa, and Daniel Ricciardo in the second Red Bull entry.

Rosberg’s opening run of Q3 was the first lap of the weekend to dip below 1:15 range, stopping the watch at 1:14.946 to Hamilton’s 1:15.034, the Englishman having to deal with some traffic in the third sector.

On their final runs Hamilton could still not deny Rosberg. The German improved to 1:14.874, with Hamilton less than one tenth of a second short at 1:14.953.

Behind them, Vettel finally vaulted up to third on 1:15.548, ahead of the Williams duo, as Bottas pipped Massa with 1:15.550 to 1:15.578. Right behind them, Ricciardo was sixth on 1m 15.589 as Fernando Alonso’s best left Ferrari only seventh on 1:15.814.

Vergne’s strong weekend continued with eighth on 1:16.162, which Button narrowly failed to match for McLaren with 1:16.182, as Raikkonen took 10th on 1:16.214 – still within seven tenths of Vettel’s best.
