Vettel Controls Monza Time Trials

MONZA, Italy – Ferrari longed to start at the front of the grid for their home race in Italy, but the Red Bulls of Sebastian Vettel and Mark Webber proved unstoppable in qualifying at Autodromo Nazionale Monza on Saturday.

And just to rub salt in the wound for Ferrari, championship-contender Fernando Alonso won’t even start third on the grid.

Vettel was in command throughout qualifying, eventually registering a fastest time of 1:23.755 to secure his 40th career Formula One pole.

Webber’s lap of 1:23.968 was good enough for second, but it was the driver in third who was the true surprise. Nico Hulkenberg surprisingly jumped his Ferrari-engined Sauber up to third with a 1:24.065.

Behind Hulkenberg were the two Ferrari’s, with Felipe Massa timing in fourth ahead of championship contender Alonso in fifth.

Behind them, Nico Rosberg managed only to time in sixth ahead of Daniel Ricciardo’s Toro Rosso, the McLarens of Sergio Perez and Jenson Button and Jean-Eric Vergne’s Toro Rosso.
