INDIANPOLIS — Jack Hawksworth, the 2012 Star Mazda Championship titlist, has been named to drive for Sam Schmidt Motorsports in the Firestone Indy Lights Series.

The announcement was made Friday morning inside the SPEED SPORT Industry Center at the IMIS trade show here.

A native of Great Britain, Hawksworth won eight races for Team Pelfrey en route to the Star Mazda crown.

“This is the dream rid in the Indy Lights Series,” said Hawksworth. “Everyone in the series wants to drive for Sam Schmidt and I am over the moon to be able to drive for him.”

Schmidt, who has tutored other Indy Lights drivers including Josef Newgarden, Conor Daly and 2012 series champion Tristan Vautier, is impressed with Hawksworth’s ability.

“We’ve already tested a couple of times and there’s a lot of raw talent there,” Schmidt said.
