Star Mazda Series Faces Sudden Hurdle

The Star Mazda field charges to the start of the Star Mazda race at Trois-Rivieres, Quebec, earlier this year.

INDIANAPOLIS — The future of the Star Mazda Championship appears in doubt.

In a letter to teams, drivers and sponsors, Star Mazda President Gary Rodrigues informed series participants that the series will not be continuing — at least not under its current ownership.

“After 22 years of growth and a proud record of helping young motor racing talent build careers in the racing industry, we regret to advise you the Star Mazda Championship will not continue into the 2013 racing season under its present ownership.

“It has unfortunately not been possible to secure sufficient support to keep the current program going. The assets of the series are being offered to qualified buyers at market price, in the hope that a company or group will be able to marshal the resources to continue this groundbreaking program for many years to come.”

The Star Mazda Championship is part of the Mazda Road To Indy Ladder System.

In his letter, Rodrigues was optimistic that the series may be saved by a new owner in time for the 2013 season.

“IndyCar and Mazda have expressed their desire to see the program continue undiminished. The 2013 Star Mazda Championship schedule was within days of release when we had to reach this difficult decision,” the letter continued. “We feel confident that the series will continue under new ownership and, hopefully, achieve its excellent potential. It is our intent to do what we can to make the transition as expeditious and seamless as possible. Further announcements are expected soon from the new series administration. Please give them the time to start the flow of information.”
