Houston Off IndyCar Schedule Next Year
FONTANA, Calif. – Because of IndyCar’S insistence on finishing the season on Labor Day weekend, the Shell and Pennzoil Grand Prix of Houston has been unable to find a reasonable date to stage an event in 2015.
So after just two seasons the Houston doubleheader is off the 2015 Verizon IndyCar Series schedule, IndyCar officials announced Friday.
The race was plagued by high-heat in both October and this past June and without finding a suitable springtime date at NRG Park race officials were unable to reach an agreement with IndyCar
“IndyCar is thankful to Mike Lanigan and his team for all their hard work and for the tremendous support of the Grand Prix of Houston that we received from Shell, Pennzoil and Honda,” said Mark Miles, CEO of Hulman & Company, the parent of INDYCAR and the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. “We look forward to a continued relationship with Mi-Jack Promotions and will always keep our options open when it comes to an important market like Houston.”
The Grand Prix of Houston was previously part of the Indy car schedule from 1998-2001 and 2006-07. The track returned to the IndyCar schedule in 2013, with Scott Dixon, Will Power, Carlos Huertas and Simon Pagenaud each picking up victories on the temporary circuit.
