Saavedra, Others Penalized By IndyCar

INDIANAPOLIS – IndyCar, the sanctioning body of the IZOD IndyCar Series, has handed out a pair of penalties following the Chevrolet Indy Dual In Detroit at Detroit’s Belle Isle Park.

The largest penalty was issued to driver Sebastian Saavedra, who was fined $30,000 after making an improper gesture toward a fellow competitor after contact during race one.

Because of the public display of these actions, Saavedra will be able to work off the fine by making a series of public appearances on behalf of IndyCar throughout the remainder of the season.

In addition, the No. 16 Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing entry driven by James Jakes was fined a total of $10,000 for violating Rule 14.6.4.6 and 14.6.4.9. Both violations were found during post-qualifying inspection for Race 1. The team was fined $5,000 for each violation.

14.6.4.6 (Rear Wing): The rear wing mainplane must be set at 0.0 degrees plus or minus 0.50 degrees.

14.6.4.9 (Rear Wing): The mainplane trailing edge height, as measured from the chassis reference plane, is 28.060 inches plus or minus 0.050 inches.

Drivers Sebastien Bourdais and Will Power have been placed on probation for the remainder of the 2013 IndyCar season for violating Rule 9.3.1.8 during race two.

Power was penalized for improper actions toward a fellow competitor after contact during race two, and Bourdais was penalized for comments made toward Officials on pit road after race two.
