MERRILL, Wis. — Readers of Racing Promotion Monthly selected three first-time and three repeat nominees as Regional Auto Racing Promoters of the Year.
They came from among more than 100 different short tracks in 41 states receiving votes. The nominees’ experience ranges from six years to more than 51 years.
One is affiliated with NASCAR for weekly racing, one with ASA, one co-sanctions with WISSOTA/USRA, and three operate independently. Three are paved; three are dirt, including two quarter-mile ovals, three three-eighths-mile ovals, and one is a half-mile oval.
The nominees are: Region One, the Eastern Region, Andrew Harpell, Five-Mile Point (N.Y.) Speedway; Region Two, the Southeastern Region, Shirley and Sylvia Porter, Anderson (S.C.) Motor Speedway; Region Three, the Central Region, Gary and Donna Howe, Kalamazoo (Mich.) Speedway; Region Four, the Northern Region, the Queensland Family, Deer Creek (Minn.) Speedway; Region Five, the Great Plains Region, Lann and Beverly Edwards, Devil’s Bowl (Texas) and Lawton (Okla.) Speedways; and Region Six, the Rocky Mountain West Region, Adam Nelson, Meridian (Idaho) Speedway.
The selection of Edwards makes him the most nominated promoter who is already the recipient of the penultimate Auto Racing Promoter of the Year Award. Harpell received his second consecutive nomination, and the Queenslands, their second in three years. The Howes, the Porters and Nelson are first-time nominees.
The Auto Racing Promoter of the Year ballot will soon be in the hands of promoters. The 35th ARPY will be revealed during the 38th annual RPM Speedweek National Workshop at the Hilton Daytona Beach, Daytona Beach, Fla., Feb. 14.
