Clauson Closing On National Midget Honor

TULARE, Calif. — Defending National Midget Driver of the Year Bryan Clauson holds a 50-point lead over Brad Loyet in the battle for the 2010 edition of the championship with three races remaining.

Loyet’s recent victory in the Bay Cities Racing Ass’n season finale at Chowchilla (Calif.) Speedway Oct. 30 allowed Loyet to close to within 50 points. Two-time champion Brad Kuhn trails Loyet by an additional 28 markers.

The next points-paying event on the schedule is the USAC Mopar National Midget Series portion of the Pacific Coast Nationals Nov. 13 at Thunderbowl Raceway. It will be the 176th midget race of the season and the first for the USAC midgets at the Thunderbowl.

Action will then switch to Jim Naylor’s Ventura (Calif.) Raceway Nov. 20 for the ARP/J.W. Mitchell Fall Classic, which will pay $10,000 to win. Kuhn is the defending champion of the race, while Loyet won the most recent feature at the track Oct 16.

The final points-paying race of the season is the annual USAC Mopar National Midget Series Turkey Night Grand Prix at California’s Toyota Speedway @ Irwindale Nov. 25. Clauson won last year’s event and overcame an 87-point defect heading into the event to claim the 2009 NMDOTY Championship.

Trailing Clauson, Loyet and Kuhn and still mathematically eligible to win the championship is 2007 champion Jerry Coons, Jr., who is 231 points behind Clauson.

Clauson’s car owner Corey Tucker holds a four-point lead over Loyet Motorsports in the car owners championship while Dalton Armstrong has essentially clinched the Design 500 Racewear NMDOTY Rookie of the Year Award. Spike (Chassis) and Ford-Esslinger (engine) have clinched the Manufacturers Championships.
