Johnson A Late-Race Hero At Brockville
BROCKVILLE, Ontario — One day after clinching the Hoosier Tire-VP Racing Fuels Mr. DIRTcar 358 Modified Series title, Danny Johnson nipped Matt Sheppard to win the Super DIRTcar Series modified feature at Brockville Ontario Speedway Sunday.
Steering Mike Payne’s small-block No. 7z, Johnson caught Sheppard when the series point leader got caught behind lapped traffic with four laps remaining.
Johnson took the lead and held on to win the second annual Global Warranty DIRTcar Northeast Fall Nationals.
“The way things are going, it might not be a bad idea racing here every week,” joked Johnson, who earned $6,000. “I was right on Matt and he knew it. I was pressuring him and he tried to go inside on the lapped car and got squeezed. They came together inside the corner and he got out of control and I went by him.”
Once in the lead Johnson opened up a commanding 10-car-length lead before crossing under the checkered flag with Sheppard giving chase. Sheppard’s second-place finish extended his championship lead to 75 points over Jimmy Phelps with two races left.
Pat Ward started on the pole and finished third. Dale Planck and Stewart Friesen completed the top five.
