Parsons, Humphrey Form HP Racing
HARRISBURG, N.C. — Randy Humphrey and Phil Parsons have partnered to form HP Racing, a NASCAR Sprint Cup Series team that will debut during the 2011 Daytona 500.
HP Racing will field the No. 66 Toyota Camry with driver Michael McDowell at the controls in at least four NASCAR Sprint Cup events. The team has moved into a shop previously used by JTG Racing’s Nationwide team in Harrisburg, N.C., and hired veteran crew chief Gene Nead to oversee the operation.
“HP Racing is a reinvention of our race team that has been operating for a couple years,” said team co-owner Parsons, who previously owned the Prism Motorsports team that fielded the Nos. 66 and 55 in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series the last two seasons. “We’re still the same people, but we see this as a tremendous opportunity to compete on a more consistent basis in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series.”
HP Racing plans to enter events at Bristol (Tenn.) Motor Speedway, Infineon Raceway in Sonoma, Calif., and Watkins Glen (N.Y.) Int’l, with others to be named at a later date. HP Racing is actively seeking sponsorship to fund the remaining races on the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series schedule.
“It is great to reunite with Randy and Phil at HP Racing,” said McDowell, who has competed in 52 Sprint Cup races since 2008. “The new shop and equipment will help us develop partnerships to grow this race team and help us push into the next level of competition. I have had great success with Gene in the past and feel confident we can qualify and run competitively in the races we attempt.”
The team will travel to Daytona Int’l Speedway this week to take part in the preseason test session at the recently repaved 2.5-mile speedway.
“We really feel like we’ve elevated our program and we’re thrilled about the team we’ve put together,” said Humphrey. “It’s an exciting time for us and we’re thankful to be able to reunite Gene Nead and Michael McDowell. We have all the elements in place to succeed, and with sponsorship we’ll be able to race competitively on a consistent basis.”
