Sheppard Honored As Super DIRTcar Champ
VERONA, N.Y. — Second-generation shoe Matt Sheppard capped his spectacular season Saturday night at the Turning Stone Resort & Casino Events Center, where he was honored for his first Super DIRTcar Series Mr. DIRTcar big-block modified championship during the 35th annual DIRTcar Northeast Night of Champions.
“(Mr. DIRT) is really surreal,” said Sheppard, who pocketed $50,000 for his season-long efforts. “I came to my first banquet 11 years ago, in 1999 when I was rookie of the year in the sportsman division. Never, ever dreamed I’d be up here where I am now.”
Danny Johnson was recognized for earning his fourth Hoosier Tire-VP Racing Fuels Mr. DIRTcar 358-Modified Championship, worth $10,000. Tim Sears, Jr. pocketed $4,500 during the banquet as champion of the Hoosier Tire-VP Racing Fuels Mr. DIRTcar Sportsman Modified division while Louie Jackson was honored for his first Hoosier-VP Mr. DIRTcar Pro Stock championship, worth $1,500.
Lance Willix II (big-block), Luke Whitteker (358-modified), Jamie Platt & Brent Kelsey (sportsman modified) and Chip Smith, Jr. (pro stock) who were named 2010 DIRTcar Northeast Rookies of the Year.
Regional champions were also honored during the banquet. Sheppard (central), Brett Hearn/Bobby Varin (east-tie) and Jeremiah Shingledecker (west) pocketed $1,200 for regional big-block titles Regional 358-modified point winners collecting $1,000 were Stephane LaFrance/Tim O’Brien (north-tie) and Pete Bicknell (west), while top point-getters in the sportsman regions receiving $500 were Chris Raabe (north), Steve Gray (central), Greg Panunte (west) and Bodie Bellinger (east).
