Super Cup Ready For Fifth Season

The Super Cup stock car series opens its season April 28 at Columbus (Ohio) Motor Speedway.

COLUMBUS, Ohio — The Super Cup Stock Car Series begins its fifth season of competition April 28 at Columbus Motor Speedway with a mix of established East Coast short track stars, newcomers and returning veterans.

Series director Joe Schmaling said, “Our slogan is ‘racing the way it used to be.’ That’s what Super Cup is.”

When NASCAR’s major series abandoned short-track racing, a vacuum was left that remains to be filled and Schmaling offers Super Cup as the answer.

“Our cars look like real cars,” Schmaling said. “They’re not rubber-nosed or slab-sided. They’re truly identifiable stock cars. They’re big, they’re heavy, and these cars have to be driven. You have no engineers in this series. The cars require a driver, not an engineer. There are no computers involved.

“This really is racing the way it used to be.”

Super Cup racing will be televised in as many as 33 million homes on the TUFF TV national television network.

The series expects continued growth in 2012 despite economic conditions that have diminished participation in many other racing series. Schmaling anticipates 16 cars at the season opener at Columbus, with as many as 22 entered in the third event at Pennsylvania’s Motordrome Speedway.

Two-time defending Super Cup champion Jody Harrison returns in 2012, seeking an unprecedented third title. He is joined by previous winners J. J. Pack, Kevin Kromer, Jimmy Crabtree and 2009 Super Cup Rookie of the Year Michael Mohelski, each of whom have vast experience on the East and Midwestern short-track circuit.

Series newcomers include Rob Morris, J. P. Crabtree and two-time road racing champion Stephen Cox.

Todd Peck of NASCAR’s Camping World Truck Series and 2011 Super Cup Rookie of the Year Rob Jones are also expected to vie for the title.
