Ernie Derr, 92

KEOKUK, Iowa — Twelve-time IMCA champion Ernie Derr died Jan. 8. He was 92.

Derr began racing on the IMCA stock car circuit in 1950 and won his first championship in 1953. Derr claimed consecutive titles from 1959 through 1962 and 1965 through 1971.

Derr, who also spent time competing on the USAC stock car circuit, won more than 320 races during his career before retiring in 1977.

Derr, who served with the 6th Armored Division during World War II, is survived by his wife, seven children, 15 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
