Gonzalez, First Ferrari F-1 Winner, Dies

Jose Froilan Gonzalez, who scored Ferrari’s first victory in Formula One World Championship competition in 1951, died Saturday. He was 90 years old.

Gonzalez, born in Arrecifes, Argentina, entered 25 Formula One World Championship events during his career. He made his Formula One debut in the 1950 Monaco Grand Prix for Scuderia Achille Varzi.

He delivered Ferrari its first Formula One victory during the 1951 British Grand Prix at the Silverstone Circuit. He won his second and final Formula One race during the 1954 British Grand Prix. He also won the 1954 24 Hours of Le Mans alongside Maurice Trintignant while driving for Ferrari.

Jack Brabham, 87, is now the oldest living driver to have won a championship F-1 grand prix.
