Highway Accident Claims 7-Year-Old Racer
A tragic highway accident has the Long Island racing fraternity in mourning.
Jason Trinca, age 7 and his mother, Geri, 30 of Eastport, were fatally injured October eighth at an intersection in Manorville.
Jason was a champion of his class in go-kart racing at Riverhead Raceway. The family was en route to the track for a practice session when the accident occurred.
Two younger Trinca children, ages four and two were critically injured. Their status has been upgraded to “serious” and are expected to recover.
On Tuesday night, a candlelight vigil was held at the Eastport High School football stadium. The crowd of friends and neighbors exceeded the seating capacity of 2,000. Jason’s Pee Wee football teammates and many of his fellow go-karters arrived in their uniforms to honor their friend. Many were wearing shirts adorned with “48,” Jason’s racing number.
The accident is under investigation by Suffolk County police. The three children were all seated in mandated child restraints. The Trinca sedan was hit broadside by a van.
Before Jason’s funeral on Saturday, the procession will drive him around Riverhead Raceway for his final lap.
