More Than 400,000 Motorsports Jobs In Indiana

INDIANAPOLIS — The Indiana Motorsports Ass’n, Indiana Economic Development Corp. unveiled the results of a study conducted by the Purdue Center for Regional Development concerning the impact of the motorsports industry on the state.

Funded by the U.S. Economic Development Administration’s Chicago Office, the study that was also supported by Indiana University’s Public Policy Institute at IUPUI, shed new light of the impact of motorsports on the state.

“Ninety one of our 92 counties have motorsports businesses,” said IMA’s Tom Weisenbach.

According to the study, motorsports produces 421,000 jobs in 24,747 businesses and firms located within the Hoosier state.

Firms in Indiana’s core racing industry employ more than 23,000 individuals with an average wage of nearly $63,000.

More than 25 percent of the motorsports firms are within the 10-county Indianapolis region, with 1,339 core businesses and another 17,468 cluster firms outside the Indianapolis area.

“This is the first day of the rest of our lives in building the motorsports industry in Indiana, “ said Rollie Helmling, who heads up the Indiana Economic Development Corp.
