Victory Lane Racing Association Banquet Set
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – One organization and ten individuals will be honored when the Victory Lane Racing Association holds its ninth annual awards banquet on Feb. 18 at the Pelican Bay Golf and Country Club. The award recipients and presenters are among the top people in the sport of auto racing. Well known racing historian Buz McKim will be the Master of Ceremonies and the event is expected to draw a capacity crowd.
The first to be honored is the Occoneechee Speedway Group, located near Hillsborough, N. C.. Occoneechee, which was entered in National Register of Historic Places on May 2, 2002 opened in 1948 and a year later ran the third event ever staged under the NASCAR banner. Famed driver Bob Flock won the first sanctioned race on the demanding nine-tenths-mile dirt oval, driving a 1948 Oldsmobile 88 to victory before a crowd of 17,500. He averaged 76.8 mph and took home a winner’s prize of $2,000.
The facility operated until 1968 and attracted virtually every driver in NASCAR. Not one of those drivers ever said that Occonneechee wasn’t the roughest, toughest track they had ever competed on. Legendary drivers can talk for hours about the competition, but mainly about the track itself.
Richard Petty brought down the curtain on competitive racing at Occonneechee by winning the final event at the facility.
In 1997, a group of historic preservationists arranged the acquisition of the speedway property. The celebration of the Automobile Car Show and Racers’ Reunion has been hosted by the Historic Speedway Group since 2007, drawing thousands of fans to the area annually.
