Following his crash at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway last Saturday, Ben Spies has undergone surgery on both of his shoulders.

The injury Spies suffered to his left shoulder at Indianapolis has been found to be worse than first anticipated. Following the crash in free practice three, the diagnosis was a third degree separation of the left shoulder (a completely new injury to that of the right shoulder that had contributed to Spies’ absence from the previous seven GPs).

After Sunday’s race which Spies watched from the sidelines, the Ignite Pramac Racing rider traveled to Dallas where it was revealed that the shoulder separation is in fact grade-five, which upped the urgency to conduct an operation.

Since Spies needed surgery on his right shoulder as a result of the crash, it was agreed that he would also undergo the needed surgery on his previously injured left shoulder at the same time. There is no time table for his return.
