Brad Baker is the defending AMA Grand National Flat Track champion. SPEED SPORT Magazine readers will learn more about Baker’s rise to stardom in the June issue of the monthly magazine. Here’s an excerpt from the story written by Larry Lawrence.

So impressive was Brad Baker’s emergence last season that it attracted the attention of Harley-Davidson, which signed him to a contract. It’s the most coveted ride in AMA Grand National racing and with Baker Harley has a rider it can build into the face of the company’s racing effort for years to come.

Unlike many of the leading young flat trackers in recent years, Baker has no plans to jump ship and seek greener pastures in road racing. He seems perfectly content following the footsteps of legendary riders such as Jay Springsteen and Scotty Parker.

Baker was simply the biggest story of 2013, which proved to be a pivotal season in the historic AMA Grand National Championship that launched in 1954. Baker heads a group of rising young stars in flat track that includes Briar Bauman, Jeffrey Carver, Matt Weidman, Brandon Robinson, Stevie Bonsey, J.D. Beach, Shoemaker, Johnny Lewis, Mikey Martin and Shayna Texter, all under 25, and all of whom are already pushing the established stars of flat-track racing.

The only surprise about Baker’s emergence is the fact he comes from the outer reaches of the country. Baker calls the logging community of Chehalis, Wash., home, but he grew up 14 miles outside the town of approximately 7,500 people.

His dad, Kip, was a racer and he passed on his racing legacy to Brad and his older brother, Scott. The homestead has a 10-acre field and that’s where the Baker boys honed their craft.
