Laverty Sweeps Jerez, Sykes Is Champ
JEREZ, Spain – Eugene Laverty completed a dream weekend with a sweep of both World Superbike events on Sunday at Circuito de Jerez.
While Laverty was celebrating his weekend sweep, Kawasaki’s Tom Sykes was celebrating after securing the 2013 World Superbike championship.
The first race came down to a breathtaking last-lap battle between Laverty and Marco Melandri. Laverty made a daring last-turn pass on Melandri on the outside to snatch the lead away in the final moments of the race.
Sykes finished third in race one, allowing him to clinch the 2013 championship. Sylvain Guintoli finished fourth ahead of Toni Elias in fifth.
Laverty battled with Sykes throughout the first half of the second race, eventually overtaking the Brit on the 13th lap and pulling away to claim his second double-win of the season and the ninth race victory – same number of wins as the new champion.
Other works Aprilia rider Guintoli completed the podium by crossing the line a lonely third, ahead of Elias and Chaz Davies.
Local Xavi Forés crashed out of turn one right after the start of the race due to a collision with another rider, while Melandri did not line up on the grid due to the injured ankle that bothered him in the first race.
