SEPANG, Malaysia — Marco Melandri and the Aprilia Racing Team enjoyed a stellar day as the eni FIM Superbike World Championship made its first appearance at Sepang Int’l Circuit.

Melandri waged a thrilling battle for the lead with his teammate, Sylvain Guintoli, who started from the pole, holding on for the victory.

Guintoli finished second with Eugene Laverty (Voltcom Crescent Suzuki) claiming the final podium spot ahead of Chaz Davies (Ducati Superbike Team) and Toni Elias (Red Devils Roma Aprilia).

Jonathan Rea finished sixth on a Honda, while David Salom was the top finishing EVO rider, taking ninth on a Kawasaki.

Defending series champion Tom Sykes was involved in an accident with Loris Baz at the start.

It was more of the same in the nightcap with the Aprilia trading the lead multiple times on the final lap and Melandri taking the checkered flag first.

Reigning champion made amends after being taken out in race one to take the final spot on the podium.

Sykes bounced back to bring his Kawasaki home third with Elias, Baz and Rea completing the top six.

Leon Camier (BMW Motorrad Italia) was the best classified EVO rider in 12th.
