“Unfortunately, there was nothing coming to fruition for the 2014 season,” Lofton recalled. “With that being said, I went back to California and moved back to my hometown and got into the family business of feeding cattle and running semi-trucks and doing everything we do back there.”

At that point Lofton wasn’t looking for a job in NASCAR, but a call from NTS Motorsports General Manager and Director of Operations Dwayne Gaulding soon changed that.

“I was spending very little time in or around the NASCAR scene,” Lofton said. “I was very fortunate one day when Dwayne Gaulding from NTS Motorsports called me up and said, ‘Hey, we want you to come out and do a test for us at Nashville Superspeedway.

“Obviously I said something right or did something right, because everybody was happy with it. Dwayne called me up and said they had some openings this season and Charlotte was one of them,” Lofton said.

Lofton returns to competition Friday night, driving the No. 9 Chevrolet Silverado sponsored by GunBroker.com during the North Carolina Education Lottery 200 at Charlotte. Lofton is also scheduled to drive for NTS Motorsports truck at Texas Motor Speedway in June and Las Vegas Motor Speedway in September.

Lofton said he and the team hope to add several more races to the schedule dependent on sponsorship.

“Tentatively we’re trying to add Iowa to the schedule, Talladega onto the schedule, possibly Pocono and then maybe Homestead just depending upon sponsorship,” Lofton said.

Just because Lofton hasn’t been racing in NASCAR recently doesn’t mean he has stayed away from race cars entirely. During his free time he has been doing some off-road racing, most recently winning his class and finishing third overall in the Best In The Desert Silver State 300.

“That is one thing I can say, I can say I race full time, but full time is only six races to run a full points schedule,” Lofton joked. “We have one of the fastest unlimited vehicles out in the desert. We’re backed by General Tire and Jimco. It is a really, really good program.”

While racing in the desert is fun, Lofton admitted returning to NASCAR full time is his ultimate goal.

“I feel if we leave here (Charlotte) with a good finish and we get our GunBroker No. 9 Chevy up to the front and lead some laps and everybody gets excited about it, we’ll continue to get the support to keep racing,” Lofton said. “It feels good to be back. I know I’ve caught the bug again and I know I want to keep racing. I want to find a way to make it happen.”
