KANSAS CITY, Kan. — Ricky Stenhouse Jr. never quit.

It paid off in victory in Saturday’s Kansas Lottery 300 at Kansas Speedway. Stenhouse grabbed the lead when leader Kyle Busch ran out of fuel exiting the fourth turn during a green-white-checkered finish and held off Austin Dillon to take his sixth victory of the season and eighth of his career, driving for Roush Fenway Racing.

Stenhouse had contact with Joey Logano early in the race and ended up losing two laps in the process. But he battled back all day and was in the right place to snag victory from the jaws of defeat.

“We were super fast once we got out front, but we were running hot, we had a 300 degree water temperature and I was trying to clean the grill off and Joey checked up and I ran into him,” Stenhouse said. “I thought it killed us, but we don’t ever give up.”

The victory moved the defending NASCAR Nationwide Series champion e to within six points of point leader Elliott Sadler who finished fourth.

Dillon finished second with Logano, Sadler and Cole Whitt rounding out the top five.

Busch wound up sixth.

“I ran out in the middle of three and four,” said Busch. “That’s why we are here to try to win. It was a frustrating defeat, but you get defeated sometimes.”

Busch remains winless on the season. He’s won races in eight consecutive NASCAR Nationwide Series campaigns.

Paul Menard led a race-high 110 laps, but ran out of gas on the green-white-checkered restart and wound up 16th.

Justin Allgaier, Michael Annett, Sam Hornish and Danica Patrick rounded out the top 10.
