Busch Speeds To Nationwide Pole At IMS

INDIANAPOLIS – Kyle Busch continues to be the “Ultimate Interloper” in the NASCAR Nationwide Series after the Sprint Cup driver won the 40th pole of his career in that division for Saturday’s Lilly Diabetes 250 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

It was his fourth this season. The other three were at Darlington (S.C.) Raceway, Charlotte (N.C.) Motor Speedway and Michigan Int’l Speedway.

It’s also the second straight year Busch has been on the pole for the Nationwide race at Indianapolis. He won last year’s Indiana 250 starting from the pole.

Busch’s fast lap was a record 179.888 miles per hour in a Toyota for Joe Gibbs Racing bettering last year’s record of 179.644 mph. Busch has started on the front row for all three Nationwide Series event at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway counting his second-place qualification effort in 2012.

Joe Gibbs Racing teammate Matt Kenseth qualified second after starting last year’s race ninth. Kenseth’s speed was 178.912 mph.

Ty Dillon was third in a Chevrolet at 178.402 mph followed by Kevin Harvick’s 178.359 mph in another Chevy. Chase Elliott, the NASCAR Nationwide Series points leader, rounded out the top five at 177.806 mph.

Drivers that failed to qualify for the 40-car field included Kevin Lepage and Tommy Joe Martins.

The Lilly Diabetes 250 is set to start at 4:40 p.m. Eastern Time.
