CONCORD, N.C. – Ryan Reed will become the first full-time driver with type-1 diabetes in NASCAR history next season thanks to a partnership between Roush Fenway Racing and the American Diabetes Ass’n Drive to Stop Diabetes campaign and Lilly Diabetes.

Reed, a 20-year-old California native, will drive the No. 16 Roush Fenway Racing Ford Mustang in the NASCAR Nationwide Series in 2014. Reed has made three NASCAR Nationwide Series starts in 2013, earning a best finish of ninth at Richmond (Va.) Int’l Raceway in September.

He’ll make his fourth career start tonight at Charlotte Motor Speedway.

“I’ve raced all my life since I was four years old, then just two years ago I was told I’d never be in a race car again. Now I’m sitting here announcing a 2014 partnership with the Drive to Stop Diabetes presented by Lilly Diabetes and the American Diabetes Ass’n to drive for Roush Fenway in the No. 16,” said Reed. “It is amazing to come from being told I would never drive a race car again to being in this position. It is just a humbling experience and I’m beyond words excited to be here.”

Reed is the second confirmed full-time NASCAR Nationwide Series driver in 2014 for Roush Fenway. The team has already announced that Trevor Bayne will return as driver of the No. 6 Ford with sponsorship from AdvoCare in 2014.

No 2014 plans have been announced for Travis Pastrana, who has driven the No. 60 for Roush Fenway in Nationwide competition this year.
