Logano Delivers For Penske At Chicagoland
JOLIET, Ill. – Joey Logano held off Penske Racing teammate Sam Hornish Jr. in the closing laps of Sunday’s NASCAR Nationwide Series STP 300 at Chicagoland Speedway to earn his second Nationwide victory of the year.
Logano ran near the front of the field for most of the 200-lap event, but didn’t become a factor for the victory until a pair of restarts in the final 25 laps.
Elliott Sadler had the dominant car all day and was out front when Mike Bliss went for a spin in turn four with 29 laps to go, bringing out a caution flag. The entire field pitted for tires and fuel under caution, with Sadler retaining the lead off pit road.
The green flag waved for the restart with 24 laps remaining and the action started quickly as Sadler and polesitter Hornish battled side-by-side for the lead. Sadler was able to clear Hornish to take the lead in turn four, but drifted high and allowed Hornish and Logano to go back beneath him coming down the front stretch.
Hornish came out of that three-wide battle with the race lead, with Logano chasing him in second. Austin Dillon snuck by Sadler for third just as the caution flag waved again on lap 179 for Reed Sorenson, who lost an engine coming down the front stretch.
