BRISTOL, Tenn. – In his first 12 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series seasons, Kevin Harvick won a grand total of six poles.

Friday at Bristol Motor Speedway Harvick won his fifth pole of the season, setting a track record in the process. His 14.607-second lap at 131.362 mph around the half-mile oval was enough to best Jeff Gordon for the top starting spot for the Irwin Tools Night Race on Saturday night.

Gordon came up just short of his third-straight Sprint Cup pole. His 14.615-second lap at 131.290 mph was still good enough to earn him the second starting position.

Carl Edwards qualified third and will be joined on the second row by his 2015 Joe Gibbs Racing teammate Kyle Busch. Joey Logano and Jimmie Johnson both lapped Bristol Motor Speedway in 14.644 seconds, with Logano getting the fifth position via tiebreaker.

Johnson will start sixth, followed by Kurt Busch, Greg Biffle, Brad Keselowski, Marcos Ambrose, Ryan Newman and Kasey Kahne.

Gordon had the fastest time in the first round of knockout qualifying, topping the charts by circling Bristol Motor Speedway in 14.688 seconds. Harvick was second followed by Edwards, Ambrose and Kyle Busch.

Kyle Larson, who was fastest in final practice earlier in the day, bounced his Chevrolet off both the inside and outside walls and was unable to put down a fast lap. He will start 40th.
