LOUDON, N.H. — Ryan Newman set a track record in winning his seventh NASCAR Sprint Cup Series pole at New Hampshire Motor Speedway Friday afternoon during qualifying for Sunday’s Sylvania 300.

Driving the No. 39 Stewart-Haas Racing Chevrolet, Newman hit the one-mile oval late in the session and turned a lap of 27.904 seconds at 136.497 mph to bump Kasey Kahne’s Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet from the top spot.

The lap broke the old track qualifying record of 135.922 mph, set by Brad Keselowski on July 14, 2013

It was the second pole of the season for Newman and the 51st of his career.

“This is the worst place for track position and qualifying the way we did is extremely important,” said Newman. “This race track is really difficult to pass on and having a good pit selection like we have many times before is important. Matt (Borland, crew chief) and all these guys did a really good job preparing the car.”

Kahne qualified second as Chevrolets swept the top four positions with Kahne’s Hendrick Motorsports teammate, Jeff Gordon, third and Front Row Motorsports driver Kurt Busch fourth.

Fifth went to Martin Truex Jr., who wheeled a Michael Waltrip Racing Toyota.

All 43 cars on hand will start Sunday’s race, though, Josh Wise crashed on his qualifying lap after a shock broke on his No. 35.
