Logano Earns Pole For Chase Opener
JOLIET, Ill. – Joey Logano will start his first Chase for the Sprint Cup from the pole position after winning the pole Friday for the GEICO 400 at Chicagoland Speedway.
Logano’s 28.509-second lap at 189.414 mph gave him his second pole of the season in the No. 22 Penske Racing Ford. Logano’s Penske Racing teammate Brad Keselowski completed the front row for Sunday’s race.
Juan Pablo Montoya, the last driver to make a qualifying attempt, timed in third. He was followed by Chase contender Kasey Kahne in fourth and rookie Ricky Stenhouse Jr. in fifth.
Jeff Gordon, who was added to The Chase earlier today by NASCAR (full story here), qualified sixth. Fellow Chasers Greg Biffle, Carl Edwards, Jimmie Johnson and Matt Kenseth completed the top 10.
Other chase contenders qualified 12th (Kyle Busch), 16th (Kurt Busch), 20th (Ryan Newman) and 24th (Clint Bowyer).
Only 43 cars made qualifying attempts, so there were no drivers who failed to qualify.
