Martin Nips Edwards For Richmond Pole

RICHMOND, Va. — Mark Martin edged Carl Edwards by six thousandths of a second to win the pole during qualifying Friday for Saturday’s Capital City 400 presented by Virginia is for Lovers at Richmond Int’l Raceway.

Martin turned a lap of 21.040 seconds (128.327 mph) on the three-quarter-mile tri-oval, putting his Michael Waltrip Racing Toyota on the pole, nipping Carl Edwards who turned a lap of 21.046 seconds in his Roush Fenway Racing Ford.

It was Martin’s 53rd career pole and fourth at RIR. It was the 10th Sprint Cup pole for Michael Waltrip Racing.

“I just love driving this Aaron’s Toyota,” Martin said. “They believe in me and they are having so much fun. That was a good lap. I didn’t think we could get the pole.”

Kevin Harvick was third in a Chevrolet while A.J. Allmendinger (Dodge) and Kyle Busch (Toyota) completed the top five.

Scott Riggs and J.J. Yeley failed to qualify.
