WATKINS GLEN, N.Y. – Juan Pablo Montoya grabbed his second-straight NASCAR Sprint Cup Series pole Saturday afternoon, setting a track record in the process at Watkins Glen Int’l.
Montoya put his No. 42 Target Chevrolet on the pole for Sunday’s Finger Lakes 355k with a fast lap of 69.44 seconds at 127.020 mph. It was the ninth pole of his Sprint Cup career and his second of the season after winning the pole last weekend at Pennsylvania’s Pocono Raceway.
Kyle Busch put his No. 18 M&M’s Toyota on the outside of the front row, clocking in at 69.49 seconds (126.928 mph).
Jimmie Johnson was third, followed by Brad Keselowski and defending race winner Marcos Ambrose.
Ryan Newman, Tony Stewart, Clint Bowyer, Martin Truex, Jr. and Jamie McMurray completed the top 10.
There were only 43 cars on hand for qualifying, meaning they will all race on Sunday.
