Rain Puts Almirola On Talladega Pole
TALLADEGA, Ala. — Rain washed out qualifying for Sunday’s Camping World RV Sales 500 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race at Talladega Superspeedway.
As a result, the field was set by practice speeds and Aric Almirola will start from the pole in Richard Petty’s No. 43.
Almirola said that the team thought heading into Friday’s practice that qualifying could be rained out on Saturday and he and his teammate, Marcos Ambrose, who will start third, turned two of the quickest laps of the 2.66-mile superspeedway.
“We really thought looking at the weather that there was a chance for rain,” Almirola said. “It is always good for the guys back at the shop to put up that PR lap to showcase your race team and me and Marcos are 18th and 19th in points so we are right next to each other when we go out for practice and they put us out in order of points so it worked out to where we were right next to each other and we went out and were committed to drafting up to the pack to try to put up the best lap that we could for both the recognition lap of how hard our guys work on our speedway stuff but also in case it did rain. That worked out.”
Jeff Burton will start second in a Chevrolet.
Ambrose, Martin Truex Jr. and Carl Edwards round out the top five starters.
Point leader Matt Kenseth and second-place point man Jimmie Johnson will share the sixth row with Johnson started 11th and Kenseth 12th.
